F is for .. Flambé

I’m feeling a tad peckish. I hope you are too, as for this installment of my Alphabet series we’re headed for a delicious dinner of flambé beef.

I follow a blog written by Loren, a Canadian who (understandably) fell in love with the Dordogne region of France. So much so that he and his wife bought a house in Daglan and now live there full time. Loren’s blog offers a wonderful glimpse into what life in a small town is like. Loren has written about a restaurant in Castelnaud-la-Chapelle called Le Tournepique a couple of times. Reading his descriptions and looking at his photos of his experiences there made my mouth water, and I knew it was a place we’d have to visit during our stay in the area. Specifically for the tower of flambé beef.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.


The restaurant offers both indoor and semi-outdoor seating. We opted to sit outside overlooking the river and enjoyed watching the colours changed as the sun began to set.

That’s Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle up on the hilltop, which houses a medieval warfare museum.

I love the soft pinky peach of the sky over the Dordogne River.

Le Tournepique’s menu offers an array of delicious and mouthwatering sounding dishes. But let’s be serious. We were there for one thing only.

La Potence de Bœuf

Roughly translated into “get in my mouth”.

So I breathlessly ordered (props to our server who smiled knowingly, instead of looking at me like I was in the middle of a medical crisis) and then we waited somewhat patiently.

The beef is served with a nice salad as well as potatoes.

We had fried cubed potatoes, but during the cooler temperatures the restaurant serves potatoes dauphinois instead.

After serving us our salad and potatoes, the server disappeared for a moment and returned with a somewhat scary looking metal tower (possibly borrowed from the nearby medieval wartime museum?) covered in cubes of cooked-to-order beef.

She placed it onto the table and, without hesitation, poured Brandy over the meat while lighting it on fire.

Everyone in the restaurant stared in awe. I might have clapped like a trained seal (I totally did). It was all very exciting, and as soon as the flames had extinguished themselves it was time to dig in.

Accompanying the beef was a selection of flavoured mayonnaise. They were perfect, and we struggled to pick our favourite.

It was everything we had built it up to be in our minds. We often talk about it still. So tasty.

Later on during dinner we heard the familiar sizzling sound at another table. We all stopped to watch the spectacle. Everyone smiled at each other. It was such a nice experience.

The service at Le Tournepique was friendly and the food was delicious. It’s not often that we get to experience such a production at the dinner table. Sadly we were too full to order any of the desserts. Next time!

Side note..
Coincidentally, Le Tournepique is located on one of the bridges that span the Dordogne River. Earlier in the day we had gone under the restaurant by canoe without realising.

  1. Thanks for your kind words, Marla! I do always enjoy your posts, so do keep writing. A minor point: “potence” is French for “gallows,” so the dish is a “Gallows of beef,” since the pieces of meat are “hanging” on the specially made serving stands. (I forget the cost, but the chef told me once, and it’s a lot!) Cheers, and stay healthy.
