To enter into Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, you must first pass through its portico. While not an original feature, this current architectural feature was designed by Carlo Fontana back in 1702.
So newish in relation to the church itself, but definitely not new.
The walls are covered with an interesting assortment of tombstone inscriptions taken from the Catacombs of Callixtus.
I took several photos of these, so let’s take a closer look.

This ornate scrolling around the doors was taken from the Baths of Caracalla.
Have you been to Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere? If you’re headed to Rome, I highly recommend you stop in for a visit. I look forward to returning one day, hopefully sooner than later.
Buona giornata!

Gorgeous! How do you get such great pictures? I am going on a sight seeing vacation in March and would like to take great pics but don’t know the key to success.

Thank you. That’s very kind. Normally I just take photos with my older mobile phone. Sometimes I have to make adjustments to the images (cropping/minor colour or brightness) with a free app on my phone called Snapseed. I think the biggest thing is to just take A LOT of photos and hope at least one of the batch turns out – because often I’m somewhere I don’t expect to return to, and won’t have an option for retakes. I hope that helps? 😊

Wow, kudos to your mobile phone! You get the right light angles and I have troubles with my pics being shaded. I will follow your advice with taking bunches and look at this Snapseed. Thank you and keep the pics coming.
