The Tortoise and the Hare

While waiting for my bag to appear on the baggage carousel at McCarran International Airport, I noticed a couple of sculptures.

Created by sculptor David Phelps, the Tortoise and the Hare are just 2 of 4 pieces located in D Gate.

The others, which I didn’t see, are the Desert Rattlesnake and the Horned Toad.

Created using cracked concrete to replicate dry cracked mud; “evocative of the desert environment.”

Without knowing of the others’ existence, I thought the pair of sculptures was a fun play on the famous fable credited to ancient Grecian, Aesop. Regardless, it was nice to look at something while waiting for the familiar whir of the carousel to start.

Bonne journée!
