Neon Vancouver | Ugly Vancouver

Back in the 1950s, Vancouver was home to more neon than Las Vegas. We had a staggering 19,000 neon signs .. 1 for every 18 people at the time!

But at some point, the powers that be decided that they were ugly and ruining the look of the city. A law was passed and only a fraction remain.

Thankfully the Museum of Vancouver has acquired a decent sized collection, and display them in one of their permanent history galleries, called Neon Vancouver | Ugly Vancouver.

Here’s a quick tour of some of the signs..

I like the look of vintage neon signs such as these. Admittedly, I’ve never had to live next to one like Kramer did in that episode of Seinfeld. Do you remember that one? I still laugh about it.

What’s your opinion on neon lights? Are they popular where you are?

Bonne journée!

  1. We have almost none just across the border in Bellingham, WA. I think some of them are well done and artistic, but I can’t imagine trying to sleep with one blinking into my window all night long!

    1. Come to think of it, I don’t know if I’ve ever noticed them in Bellingham. The Bob’s Burgers sign might be the only one I can think of, but that doesn’t have the same neat vintage-y vibe.
